Show us the PC that runs Longhorn!!!
I find it interesting they show something that may, might, someday become a real product while NOT telling us what the anticipated Longhorn platform will be. The reason of course is user shock.

Many discussions have been held here in the talkbacks about why Longhorn is being delayed so much and speculation has ran rampant. But according to "water cooler gossip" one of the big problems is that the hardware for it isn't there yet and is NOT at a price point the average user (or corporation) is willing to pay.

Loosely, MS has defined what a Longhorn PC will require to run efficiently. (Yes it will run on existing hardware, very slowly according to my own non-scientific tests.) What does MS envision as a Longhorn hardware platform?

CPU: 6 Ghz, dual core or 4-6 Ghz dual CPUs. In either case they will be 64-bit based machines.

RAM: 2 Gbyte minimum, 4 is much better and 16 is really where servers need to be.

Graphics: The GPU needs to be a minimum of 3 times faster than anything on the market today.

And of course all the peripherals in the machine will need to be upgraded SIGNIFICANTLY to handle the other improvements. (Data Bus, I/O, etc.)

The fact is that while such a machine can be built today, it's cost puts it out of Joe Average users grasp or justification. The hope is that the hardware will be ready and much cheaper by the time Longhorn ships.

In other words, don't look for MS to show us a Longhorn platform (WinHEC or anywhere else) until the hardware cost is something the public will accept...
