OK, this is where I actually defend MS
And a pox on you for making me do this. I'll do it on two fronts.

First of all, they DO have different tier levels of the Vista package. One gives you basic operating system functionality, the others give you various entry level applications. For a lot of people those entry level apps are all they will ever need, and they are getting them at a decent price. But also keep in mind it is an option. Customers can either get these entry level apps for a higher price, or they can do without and either not have them or buy competing applications.

The other front where I'll defend them is on the subject of utilities, which are included in even the basic operating system. MS has been criticized almost since their existence for various problems with their operating system, from security to optimization to simply fixing things that are broken, so much so that third party vendors have had to come in and address many of these problems. MS has a right to address the issues that keep their product from working properly and they have a right to address the issues that their customers deem important. These utilities are a part of MS's efforts to fix the problems that customers have been complaining about. The bottom line is that Microsoft Windows has a right to exist, and as such MS has a right to do whatever it takes to keep the product in working order according to its customer's demands. You can disagree with their method in how they fix thing (but if you do, you should offer a reasonable alternative solution, otherwise you're just blowing hot air), but you can't disagree with their right to do it.
