Not so hidden cost of Windows
Wait a minute, what about all the support software you need to keep Windows relatively secure?

Just amazes me the way the cost of anti-virus software, firewalls, security appliances and backup software gets swept under the rug with Windows cost estimates. How is it those costs are so consistently overlooked? I've heard reps claim anything outside the license costs were part of the "cost of doing business." In a business environment the support costs can run into the hundreds of dollars a year PER SEAT! And if you don't spend that money you'll lose revenue with down time.

Some of that you would need even if you're running OS X or Linux but not all of it, especially not with Linux. I script my nightly backups, no extra software required. And until someone demonstrates a working Linux virus in the wild I'm not going to worry about an anti-virus subscription. Smoothwall and a NAT router makes for a pretty secure network.
