Again we go back to the true meaning of operating System
An operating system is intended to facilitate easier communication between the user or program, and the system hardware - it's what accessess the harddrive/memory etc ...

So, how does a Document creator, calculator, firewall, internet browser, e-mail client, IM Client, Game, or Anti-virus program qualify as part of an operating system - without an operating system they would be useless.

The vast majority of the Applications and features you are talking about are not nessecary parts of ANY operating system, and IMHO should be stripped from this and any future MS Operating system - if MS wasn't making a trillion bucks on Office, I guarantee you it would become part of the operating system.

This industry needs to get back to roots, let the people who write good Security programs write security programs, those that create great Office apps can create those. If MS spent all of it's energies on creating a really good GUI based OS, instead of spending useless time porting old apps to new OSes, or creating new apps/tools that infringe on others territory, I bet they could build a great OS - And that says alot, because I dont' think MS could program it's way out of a paperbag.
