.NET means a lessening of MS desktop dominance...
After seeing where Microsoft was going with .NET and seeing how quickly there were legitimate implementations of Common Language Infrastructure available for Linux, BSD, OS X, Solaris et al I was left wondering if Microsoft really understood the impact of their strategy. By far the biggest strength of Windows is the applications that run on it. Windows and it's APIs make it easy (many, including myself, would say too easy) to develop applications on Windows. Now that ease of development has been made pretty portable. As long as you stay away from using COM interop, avoid unmanaged code and avoid the Microsoft.xxx namespaces the same application should run identically on any of the platforms that, say, Mono runs on. The indirect impact of making it as easy to develop for any other OS as it is to develop for Windows is potentially huge. Probably unfortunate, but huge.
