Media Center PC's and Linux
A case in point about the home use of Windows vs. Linux.

Microsoft is now packaging what that call Windows Media Center Edition. I recently got a Toshiba widescreen laptop with it and I have to admit, I fairly impressed.

I've been a big fan of media convergence PCs since the first mainstream TV tuner cards came out for the PC in the late 80's. But to be honest, it never work all that well. I had even look at Mac's, but what I saw there too wasn't really what I wanted and in the early 90's, that stuff was out of my price range.

With Media Center 2004, a practical, plug and play media convergance machine is finally hear. I did do a few upgrades to my laptop and have trip up on a few things, but out of the box, it worked as advertised, and pretty well. Not any harder than setting up a TiVo and DVD player.

Of course there is a Linux project, MythTV that is a similar system. But go look at the site. I tried to play with this stuff, but how in the heck who is not a real expert will Linux can get this stuff to work. Definately not a guy that just wants to record TV shows and moives.

Linux vendors are going to have to spend BIG bucks to put these kinds of systems together if they want to compete.

Yes Linux has come a long way, but so has Windows. The PC's of today are beooming TRUE multimedia devices. Office suites are nice, but that was a long time ago. Audio, Video, and natural language interfaces and the applications driven buy these capabilities are the future of the home AND business PC.

An it is simply going to take more that a guy or two in there spare time to make it happen for Linux.

Linux needs a well funded project for developing the next wave of convergence multipurpose PCs.
