I don't think it will be as simple as that. I haven't rushed out to buy a new TV and my stereo is going on 15 years old. Heck, I still own a turntable and an 8-track player, though I am slowly ripping my stuff to digital (hard when you have 1000s of albums). However, I still want to listen to my personal, paid for material whenever and wherever I choose.

There are still turntables and portable cassette players out there for sale. Same with non-HDTVs and VCRs. People are not as willing as you seem to think to toss and replace with each new change. I currently burn my MP3s and WMA files to CDs to listen to in the car. How do you delete those? Or make them unplayable? My player is not running a calendar in the background to know when to kill the file.

Now if the "the hardy souls who insist on their right to 'own' the music" do persevere and prevail, then this player will be the thing with little market influence.

Let's hope the DMCRA passes so that we no longer have to be sucked into this Ponzi scheme. Otherwise, we become the suckers who pay and pay for diminishing returns while the top no longer has to do anything but rake in the cash.
