The public wants the product from the Internet...
... and the suppliers of entertainment are interested only in having as little disruption of their existing practices as possible.
The media companies are also more concerned with attacking "piracy" than with making more money.

Put those together, and you get a situation where the media companies are willing to sacrifice huge profits in order to limit what people can do. Guess a few more people need to lose their jobs before leadership will behave sensibly.

Into this self-inflicted disaster walks Microsoft. They're in the software business, and their own products have been "pirated" for years. If anyone knows that protection schemes can be broken it's Microsoft.
But still they develop and sell these solutions that won't work. Why? Because some idiots will pay for them.

If it weren't Microsoft taking the money-for-nothing it would be somebody else. Might as well be a company whose stock is probably part of the support of thousands of widows and orphans. Bring a little sunshine into their dark lives.
Makes you feel good, doesn't it?!
