Lots of reasons
Could be people in the US don't buy many BMWs. So that means the US market is small. Now seeing as North American cars are different than the rest of the world in terms of which side the driver sits in that means that BMW has to produce a different car for the US market. So fewer are made and the production costs are higher for North American car.

Another problem is Europeans make more money than us in North America but pay more for goods. So while I may make 75% less I can buy more with my money. So production costs to build a BMW in Europe would also be more adding to the price. Then take all the taxes they have over there and that just adds to price. Top that off with a marketing to US buyers convincing them that paying more for a car from Europe is worth it as they have car that most others don't.

Also is the BMW really that over priced? What's it compare to the equivalent luxury vehicles from Ford, Dodge or GM? I really don't know as I don't buy luxury cars that lose 50% of thier value the second you drive it off the lot.

Personally if people in the UK don't like the price of Vista they should talk with thier Walets. XP is still out there and if you don't buy Vista at all due to price the price will have to come down and major OEMs will push for that when find they can't sell PCs because of the price and white box shops start getting all the business.
