As one old enough...
to have watched the computer grow from vacuum tubes, it's been interesting to watch the rise and fall of many companies (remember when Atari and Commodore were the BIG players?!) And the gambit played by MS has been spectacular! They've created a monster business!

Now, the monster must be fed to continue its existence.

Thanks to the proliferation and ubiquity of the personal computer (whatever brand/OS) many great minds/ideas have been allowed to flourish and collaborate worldwide. Even as MS assimilates new technologies and business models, these unfettered minds create new opportunities to express themselves in hardware and software applications.

No, MS Live will not fail. (I don't know how happy I am about that.)

I won't likely use any of the products, myself, but that doesn't constitute statistical relevance.

I would put my money on the concept of corporate entities realizing that they can free themselves of a large portion of their IT costs by "outsourcing" software installation/ compatability issues. Outsourcing IP compliance issues. Automatic offsite data backup. Global accessibility, and on, and on.

I can see this trend producing much more unforeseen growth in as-yet-unrealized applications of new techiques and technologies that this new vehicle will bring with it through the many, many brilliant minds among us. (Just like every other leap forward has occurred.)

And, I can see that MS will continue to grow by assimilating some of these promising new companies/technologies into Windows Vista 2012. (And, like The Borg, they won't care if anyone complains.)

And I'm not too sure that all our kvetching will change anything. If you don't like the MS hegemony, are you using a non-MS OS? Are you using a non-MS office suite? Are you using a non-MS browser? Email client? Graphics app? Games? Gaming console? MP3 player? Toaster? ...wait... that's not out, yet.
