The key is the API
Microsoft will have to figure out what to do. One interesting initiative is definitely the marketplace with BT: http://news.com.com/2100-7345_3-6161402.html

Googles approach to growing n ecosystem (much rather then "building" it) seems to be working out. The key here is Google API. For example we are developing an FREE open source "business application platform" (think salesforce.com). Our first application is working tightly integrated with GOOGLE APPS. http://www.applicationexchange.com.

Other companies like Avaya are already on the bandwagon. More will follow.
