A PC dying is a subjective term...
If you think about it, a death of a pc is subjective, to a simple user, it's when the PC simply doesn't function how they'd expect. For a more advanced user, it could require a more critical part failure or a group of parts to fail.

As for Vista, I wasn't too thrilled by it, but it (Vista RC2) ran on my system (512MB 1.5 Ghz Athlon) like running XP with 128 MB of ram. It had more visual appeals and better selection of desktop backgrounds, I also liked the networking and parental controls. But to those who think they are forced to upgrade to Vista with a new computer, build your own and put whatever you want on it. Also, you can recycle some hardware, that's a plus.
