But I can still get the 2.2
2.4 kernels, and if I am willing to pay for it, I can get support for them as well. Or if I know how I can support them myself. I don't like car analogies, cars are physical objects subject to actual fatigue and failure. Bits and bytes are no subject to the same laws of physics, and barring a severe cataclysmic event, pretty much can be restored to the state of new regardless of age.

And my point was once again the forcing of people into things they do not want or need. Many have voiced their preference to stay with XP. They like it and are comfortable with it. So if they do not have a set-up disk they are screwed (well sorta, they can go onto E-Bay and possibly buy an XP install disk) but they are screwed in that they want the new PC with XP pre-installed it isn't happening.

So my point is the user is once again forced to take what they are told to take. devil

And don't pander the user has a true unbiased choice of OS's either, go into any circuit city, best buy or even fry's and you will find two choices Mac or Windows. You don't see Linux in the mix and of the two choices available, Windows is always the first and foremost to be displayed or talked up. Then if you go online to Dell, Gateway or any of those others... you have one choice. Windows. Some of them say they sell Linux pre-installed but try finding it easily on their web pages. devil
