If what you say were actually true...
you'd see more companies using PostgreSQL or MySQL or Ingres than you do SQL Server. In reality, you see those databases taking up about 10% of the market combined. It's kinda hard to point to the "big boys" when you can't even talk about more than 10% of the market. The real big boys use either Oracle, Informix or DB2 on some Unix variant or z/OS. The "middle" boys tend to lean towards SQL Server on Windows, ASE on Unix or even Progress. There are a lot of companies of all sizes that utilize open source database systems for small utility applications. Almost none use them for mission critical situations. They just don't. Sorry...

Now, you can say what you want about whether SQL Server is scalable or not. Looking at http://www.tpc.org/tpcc/results/tpcc_perf_results.asp?resulttype=all it seems to me that there are none of the databases you mentioned in the top 10. There's DB2, there's Oracle and there's SQL Server 2005. Kinda hard to make the claim of being more scalable when you can't even get into the top 10...
