As much as I'd like to agree with you...
SQL Server is a decent database. 2005 is better than 2000, which was better than 7.0, which was better than 6.5... There aren't many Microsoft products that have actually gotten better instead of just getting bigger. SQL Server is one of those very few. MySQL still has a long way to go to be ready for the enterprise. So do PostgreSQL and Ingres. To rank databases by functionality, ease of use and available development tools, you'd have the following:

1. Oracle
2. SQL Server
3. Everything else

The marketplace and the developer community will back this up. Several open source databases have made huge strides in the last 10 years, but they're still way behind the commercial competition. I may even have to put UniData above any of the open source alternatives simply because it scales better than any other database out there (commercial or open source). It's only problem is that it doesn't support data typing, so it takes a true professional developer to ensure the integrity of the database.
