Scanner drivers for linux at
http://www.sane-project.org/sane-mfgs.html#CANON
Most of the time scanner and webcam drivers are reverse engineered, not provided by the companies. The most clueful companies ( i.e. Epson ) provide hardware documentation to the SANE-project developers and sell more scanners.
2) Look into OpenOffice 1.1.1 a little deeper. You can save an Impress presentation as a Flash file, thereby solving your problem for number 4) .
You also might want to keep Oepnoffice handy if you upgrade to OfficeXP. I have had to use Open Office as a translator between MSOffice 2000 and MSOfficeXP. MSOfficeXP will not read some MSOffice2000 Word files.
3) IF you need CMYK right now try CINEPAINT http://cinepaint.sourceforge.net/ , It's an offshoot of GIMP that is used by many film studios.
4) NVU is at version 0.2, see my solution in 2)

5) I'm not familiar with some of these applications, but FamilyTreeMaker might be comparable to Gramps , http://gramps.sourceforge.net/, PIC Programming, http://www.linuxjournal.com/article.php?sid=3045

6) If you, or a friend, have a high-speed internet connection, a cd burner, and blank cds, you can download the iso installation CD images for several linux distributions including Red Hat Fedora, Mandrake, Debian, Slackware, etc. at no charge, no license fees, install it on an unlimited number of computers.
