The underlying facts are details. I am under the impression that IBM paid for the DOS license. Nonetheless, IBM's treatment of the PC was first-class dumb.

From what I have read, the PC was viewed in the same light as the mini - not an opportunity, but some kind of threat. Armonk invested in a visionary, industry changing startup, and then alternately ignored and hamstrung it. That generation of management well deserved its demise.
