hmm... DIGITAL UNIX...
Yes, I remember it. In fact it lived into the Alpha era and I used a few computers with it - funnily, you could also opt to buy your Alpha system with WinNT (for those who don't care about security, uptime, or efficiency).

UNIX is far from dead - the server space is the only part of the OS market which MS can 'grow' into and the numerous UNIX systems with their associated costs would have been an easy target for MS if they could only produce an operating system that - well - operated. Unfortunately for MS Linux was there and it runs on an unprecedented number of CPUs - and it's getting close to being as good as any other UNIX variant for just about any task while MS software really sucks at the best of times (it can't even handle time/date properly! haha!). But now that Sun has put Solaris on an Open-Source license, there's another big contender in server space. And for specialty companies who used Sun/Solaris boxes as a subsystem in their products, this is just fantastic news. Based on available drivers and technical merit, the competitors in the server space should be Linux, Solaris, and BSD (really big iron tends to have its own UNIX variant on it) - really no space for MS. BUT it's amazing what you can do with advertising and computer-illiterate accountants/managers...
