Secret Ballots afford opportunities for abuse
In the last presidential election, we had the voting machines that one pulled down the levers to select our candidates. It made a mark on the paper roll inside that corresponded to the choices and was supposed to be the most fool-proof of the methods in use at that time.

I voted for a major third-party candidate but when the voting tallies were posted, my choice was officially listed as having ZERO votes. Now, as I know I voted for him and at least four others did so as well, there was something wrong with the picture. When we protested, we were told that the ballots were secret and we could not review the rolls (none of which had any individual's identifying markers). It wasn't like I lived in a huge city with millions of voters. The entire county only had 10,000 voters, less than 3000 of whom actually voted and I only wanted a review of one polling place.

Secret is good if you can trust it, but looking at that example and at what happened in Florida we really need something better!
