The printer isn't the issue
The hardware isn't the problem in this case. The challenge is to encode the "receipt" in such a way as to ensure that it was produced by the voting machine and you also have to ensure that no one leaves the polling place with the receipt. (If people can prove their votes then they can sell them.)

Diebold is definitely going about this thing all wrong. This is probably a really good example of a problem that requires an open source solution.
