- re: IBM doesn't do PCs

>>> The smartest thing that IBM ever did was to sell off their PC Division. <<<
I couldn't disagree more. Just because they didn't know how to handle support in the consumer space was no reason to bail out and sell the division. The reasons they failed are very much in line with their inability to market and sell software - ie OS/2, SmartSuite, and others.
Had they pulled their different divisions together and focused on *one* set of priorities at a time they could have single-handedly changed the direction of the x86 desktop market. They had everything needed:
~ Top of the line hardware
~ A fantastic operating-system in OS/2
~ A complete and full set of developmental tools
~ Complementary software apps for the desktop
~ An excellent reputation (for the most part)
But as with everything IBM they were/are completely disjointed. Certain groups doing one thing, and other groups doing the complete opposite, pulling in a totally different direction.
And as read in the documents released during MS's anti-trust trial, they completely caved when Microsoft decided to play hardball with them.
IMO had they told Gates and crew to bugger off and pulled their own units together things might have turned out totally different. Not perfect by a long shot mind you, but very different than what we have now with Windows and the insanity of Microsoft.
