IBM hasn't been asleep
Lotus Notes is a market-leader and with turnover up 30% last-quarter its going from strength to strength...

Lotus Sametime is the market-leader for business-strength instant-messaging and presence awareness...

IBM's strategy is simple, all the software products it has, and all those that its acquires through the purchase of software-houses (roughly 6 per annum at last count), are rewritten to work under the Eclipse RCP.
Eclipse RCP allows all their software packages to;-
(a) run natively on Windows 32-bit, Windows 64-bit, Mac OS X, and Linux with only a single code-base to maintain,
(b) easily interoperate with each-other, allowing the creation of composite applications
(c) be extended by third-party's through the development of Eclipse plug-ins (eg there's a plug-in in for Sametime that interacts with Google Earth to show you where your buddies are).
