The rush was to buy old stock...
I have a couple of friends that bought the old stock that was being "given" away (got free HP All In One printers thrown in as well). They got Dual core Intel notebooks with 100GB disks and 1GB RAM for $599 Canadian.

The other reason was to get a PC with XP still on it before the forced upgrade to Vista happened (they got the free upgrade certificates). This way they still get to decide what software they can run vs MS deciding for them.

They also don't have the driver glitches and hardware kill switches in them for "premium content".
