because at xmas you could buy a pc/laptop w/ a vista upgrade coupon, many sales still occurred. there still could be some delayed purchases for those that didn't want to have to upgrade after the fact, but many people find that putting a gift under the tree has more value than the time it takes to perform the upgrade. i am speaking as a person who has worked in sales and has a little understanding of holiday shopping. nice try though. now that helps to put those stupid mac commercials in their place, in the trash.
