You don't seem to understand basic principles
and Vista was really built over 2 years from 2004 to 2006. And let's face it, if they had brought out Vista 2 or 3 years after XP, everyone would have been screaming about Microsoft already forcing users into an upgrade. No matter which way it went, the anti-ms crowd was ready with rhetoric. Who really cares it's been this long....companies are happy with XP as are users and they got a major release (basically a brand new OS with SP2 so to say it's been that long is not entirely factual. SP2 was almost a rewrite).

Now, why has MS been slow to implement UAC. that answer is simple...if they had not phased it in over time it would have broken way more apps that it did now and it would not have been managable. There are still many vendors not complying with building their apps so they don't stomp all over system areas with user data and people here at zdnet are calling those "windows" incompatibilities. They've been phasing it in over time as required. Like it or not, that is how it happened.

To claim the OS is a piss poor example of what customers don't need, you must have something to base your claims on? You are not talking about the gui or the hardware requirements are you? Average price for Vista premium loaded laptop - 900.00. so that one is a non-issue. What else? Have you used the foundation classes of .net 3.0 with Vista yet? IE 7 running in isolated mode....have you tried running office 2007 on Vista? Try Vista as a client to sharepoint and see what you think about it as a web client with no programming necessary.....it's the configurability that is the Windows draw and the fact you are not locked into just what Steve Jobs tells you, you can run. Business loves the choice of machines and configs as do over 90% of the users....some can't afford a mac, so want way more of a machine like a high end Toshiba. With the Mac you are out of luck. No choice. I personally have never had problems with XP and love working with Visual studio and Office programming. A non programmer can pretty much customize these apps. Excel is not just a spreadsheet anymore but an extremely powerful front end to your BI, which is on fire in business today. There are many reasons well beyond the superficial reasons Mac users cling to.

btw, I'm using a 5 to 6 year old toshiba satellite running XPSP2 and have never had an issue and it runs great. No complaints at all and XP will host admin tools for all major components of the network....Active Directory, Group policy mgmt and Exchange server tools.
It's locked down vs. choice of machine. I like choice.
