It's called 'proprietary'. And it's pretty much a bad thing for technology.
What if you had to have special software to look at (or get things from) Amazon? And another for E-Bay? And another for ... ?
What if you bought movies on DVD from these places, and they only played on a certain DVD Player that THEY sold?

It might be one of the reasons that not very many people took advantage of it.
