Microsoft only got into the game business to maintain the monopoly.
Microsoft realized that with more powerfull processers, that game consoles might be some peoples only computer and end up being used for web, email, word processing, etc. They did not want to give that market to Linux and have people getting used to open source. So, as far as IBM is concerned, they would much rather see SONY succeed, and have this back-fire on Microsoft. Either way, they will be making the money on the chips!! Well, with Microsoft willing to throw billions at this, no problem losing lots of money, hard to say what will happen. Sony on the other hand, realizes that the computer will become the center of home entertainment, and does not want to let Microsoft control things here, they are also willing to lose money, but are a lot smarter about this business.
