Free software is a movement NOT a business
With due respect, I submit that free software grew out of a genuine philosophical concern and voluntary contribution of creative labour of global community. They all believed that it was and still is the true way of empowering the lay people. They did reach this point without any corporate finances and they will certainly go forward in future in making people's choice truly free without looking towards business investments. It does not mean that the free software movement does not require investments to go forward. May be it is here that the global community of users should come forward voluntarily and contribute the necessary resources to these "freedom fighters".

Whether the French government's investment in pen drives with free software is right or wrong is a question that can also be looked at from a point of view of creating a positive space for the free software, rather than looking at it purely from economics. You are absolutely right that government should invest in creating employment, but kindly see that this investment is also a right investment in creating awareness among the younger generation to move towards freedom from proprietary and costly softwares, whereby millions of Euroes will be saved in the society.

All this of course speculation but based on our experience of the history of the Internet in the last 10 years.
