maybe your real world
in the real world I've encountered, a default install of Kubuntu pretty much covers everything that people are expecting, as Konqueror, and OpenOffice do what people are looking for for their needs, and guess what? I've had my parents (who'd never used anything like Linux before) running their work on it within 2 minutes.

my mom is a technophobe, yet it still was next to no time for her to adjust.

I sincerely doubt people would consider it broken if you point to the icon, say "office", point to the other icon, say "internet".

it's that simple. People don't need as much retraining as you seem to think they would. They just need to be shown that the alternative exists, and works the same.
