Which version?
Microsoft Office has changed quite a bit over the years.

So, will people leaving high school really have a chance at knowing "the current Office version skills?" Unless their school/parents are rich enough to perpetually upgrade and retrain the answer has to be no.

So, the question for a school is, Whatever Office suite skills we teach will be out of date by the time they graduate, so why are we spending all this money on Microsoft Office when it is hardly like to be worth a darn in terms of "Must have current Office version X skills."

Also, if employers are going to be hiring fresh out of school people they have to realize that the kids will not be proficient in the "current version" and will have to train them, or let them get up to speed themselves.

So, why not go for the OpenOffice and other free products?

That aside, unless times have changed, I'm sure there are advertisements out there right now who want people with 10 years of Office 2007 skills.

And one last note, Microsoft Office isn't renowned at being all that version compatible either. That is actually the reason I first got interested in OpenOffice, it made less of a mess with differently sourced WP documents than MS Office did.
