Two easy examples: Win95, .and Harry Potter
Read this about Harry Potter:

It sold 2,009,574 copies in Britain on the first day"

And, think about what happened with Win95. There was no chance of shortage, it was just software for gods sake. Why did they line up and wait long hours to be the first to buy it?????? They knew they would be able to buy it later.

WHEN THERE IS EXCITEMENT ABOUT A PRODUCT, PEOPLE WILL FORM LONG LINES, EVEN KNOWING THAT THERE WILL BE NO SHORTAGES. IT IS NOT JUST SHORTAGES THAT CREATE THE LONG LINES.

Companies love excitement. It sells products. The fact that you can't generate excitement is a bad indicator. And, did you every consider that the excitement over the game consoles is what caused the shortages? Shortages do not cause much excitement in and of themselves. Shortage or not, who will in line wait at midnight for a boring product (think VISTA)???
