Irrelevancies
No. Your negative comments (along with those from other ABMers) *here* are the problem, not Vista. However...

"Because I am an IT person, and will have to work with PCs purchased by other people, not just myself."

Irrelevant. If your job requires you to know *facts* about a particular OS installation, then you'd better stick to reading up on *facts* instead of rumors and suppositions.

"Because my relatives will be asking me to help with their computers."

Fine. Steer them in the direction that is best for *them*, not in the direction that is your *opinion* of what's best for them.

"Because I care if other people get ripped off, and am willing to stand up and say something if I think they are going to be ripped off."

Irrelevant. Six months from now, Joe Average will be unable to get XP pre-loaded on a new machine. Are you going to steer him to some flavor of Linux and promise him that it will work just as well as Windows does, for *him*? Or are you going to recommend that he buy a Macintosh instead, regardless of how many hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of Windows-based software he has to toss out because it won't run without...Windows? Tell me more about ripoffs, Mister IT Professional.

"Because it may be the best opportunity to expand the playing field for operating systems in a long time."

Hogwash. And you know that, whether you want to admit it to yourself or not.

"Because watching pro-MS people chant "Then don't buy it" is amusing."

Irrelevant. Is it as amusing as watching ABMers chant "Buy a Mac!" or "Download Linux! It's FREEEEEEE!"?

"Because I happen to think that some of the actions in Vista are not only anti competitive, but violate the anti-trust ruling."

How so? Please specify. And also tell us where you received your law degree.

"Because information is important, and my opinions are information (so are yours)."

Are disinformation, speculation, FUD, et al, also important as *real* information?

"Because I don't want to see a situation where Microsoft literally has the ability and the right (according to the Vista license) to remove OpenOffice.org from my PC."

As I asked a different fool to do, kindly show me how this may occur. I don't think you can. Make a liar out of me. Give me FACTS, not some rumor you heard while lounging around the water cooler. Otherwise, STFU.

"Because Microsoft annoys me."

Irrelevant. Feckless ABMers annoy me. If you don't like Microsoft, don't use their products. (There. I said it. Did it amuse you?)

"Because I think all sides of a debate should be aired."

It didn't become a "debate" until the Usual Suspects (they know who they are) made it one. And this happens *every* bloody time in almost *every* bloody Talkback discussion, because there are Some People who think they *must* rant against in *every* Talkback discussion. That's the clue-by-four that I originally wielded. Did I finally manage to drive my point home? Probably not.

"Because it is possible that changing to a Mac will show a person some of the bad points about Vista."

Then steer them to Apple Insider or one of the other pro-Mac blog sites. Force them to watch those cutesy-poo Macintosh commercials a la "A Clockwork Orange". Why bother to even mention Macintoshes in the middle of a markedly non-Macintosh article discussion?

"Same for Linux."

See above, but change the destination. Unfortunately, there are no cutesy-poo Linux commercials.

I will state my original point, the one I made to Voska, once again:

Discussing the good points and bad points of the article is one thing. Discussing the good points and bad points of a particular piece of software is one thing. But coming into Talkbacks and ranting against , while ignoring the article, is a whole 'nother thing. It's rude. It's a waste of time (you *are* at work while you're reading and writing here, aren't you?) And it is most certainly counterproductive.

Professional?

Ah doan' think so, bubba.

Oh, and like this particular post, it's *way* off topic.

Have a *really* nice day.
