This is a feature I would welcome, not hate
I think it's high time there is a permanent register somewhere for software licences.

I'm sick of people ripping off software. Don't use it, or use free software (GPL or BSD). There is no reason not to.

The software register (for commercial software) would allow you to login, and download working copies of all software you have a licence to use, on any machine you log in to (if you want), but only for your user id. (perhaps some sort of flash card as an encrypted key).

The reasons I won't be going to Vista are: (1) Expensive (2) Slow and (3) No compelling features, although this one you mentioned makes me think I might get it earlier than I imagined (but only when hardware upgrade is much cheaper).
