Gasoline is a red herring ... and creates alot of smog
OK, so the water needs to be converted into H2 and O2 which takes energy. Right now the effort is being put into developing fuel cells to combine hydrogen & O2 into water to generate electricity to power electric motors rather than using combustion for power.

Fuel cells are nice but big power output is way off unless you use corrosive chemicals like the space shuttle does, not good for cars & busses.

Even if fuel cells were viable today H2 storage is the real issue ... and H2 as a replacement for gas is immediately viable for about $100 total cost to convert an engine. Installation of the H2 storage is a seperate issue - in fact its the real issue for both fuel cells and internal combustion.

But, how many Joe Sixpacks realize the car they drive today is already hydrogen powered (using gas) and if it was converted to pure H2 it would work fine - today - with either a 15% drop in power but almost zero pollution or a 15% gain in power for same level of pollution.

Go figure - the government and the industrialists keep telling us hydrogen power is 20 years out ... ever wonder why?

And what if we simply moved to corn oil or used methanol/biodiesel? Instead of using our farmers to power our car we pay them not to grow corn and import this ancient fuel source - dinosaur juice!
