Vista Compatibility and Value
I just got ahold of Vista (64 bit) and Office 2007 and installed them on a PC with the following configuration: CPU - Pentium Duo 2.8Ghz (2mb cache); RAM: 1Ghz DDR400; HDD: 2x160Gb SATA; Video: 512mb Geforce PCI-X 6200; Sound: Creative Audigy.
First impressions: PROs: install was much easier than anticipated and, although I'm a bit lost at the moment, the new interface of Office 2003 is more intuitive than previous versions. CONs: Creative has not and apparently will not provide drivers for Vista x64 for 'older products' so I'm using the onboard sound; my 512mb Geforce 6200 rates a measley 2.4 on the Vista Experience Index, meaning that, although I'm using Ultimate, I can only access the GUI of the Basic Edition. If 512mb and DX9 aren't sufficient to use the much-touted aero interface, what is? I installed the latest drivers from Nvidia but maybe they'll come out with better ones... My biggest 02 beefs are 1) the system denying me access to folders and 2) incompatibility of a VBA-based program I use in my work with Vista x64 (it worked fine with Office 2007 and Windows XP)
All in all, I intend to downgrade back to XP until the bugs are fixed in Vista and supporting drivers.
