Pay more for less? Say again?

I listen to music via my car system or my home system. I own no portable music player. I just can't get my head wrapped around the idea of paying more for music online than off (my average CD price has remained at between $5 to $7 per CD delivered to my door including tax and shipping/handling for the last 6 to 8 years). Why pay greater than CD prices for a much less quality product? I am not a "golden ear" but I can tell the difference on both my car and home systems between a CD and one ripped to the computer at the highest MP3 quality level (I send a digital signal to the digital inputs of my receiver). I can't imagine how much worse the typical 120kbps (or whatever the nomenclature is) WMA or AAC version would sound.
