I had no trouble installing the software, and unless you set up an account there is no need to send any info to Apple (like an email address or the like).

Even if you have no intention of ever buying an iPod, you can use it to rip CDs you own to your laptop if you're always going to have that with you anyway. I like the interface, but I've had uneven results with the "album info" for tracks taken from a real CD: It recongnized the albums and tracks by name, but only had "album info" for popular music.
