iTunes ushers in a year of change

You've got to laugh at this.

"Apple is probably still riding the wave of their initial launch,"
said Jason Reindorp, a group manager in Microsoft's Windows
digital media unit. "They have spent an inordinate amount of
money to generate awareness around their closed ecosystem.
(But) as people get more sophisticated in this area they are
going to be getting more frustrated with a closed ecosystem. I
think the market will kind of self-correct as things get more
mainstream."

Talk about a "closed ecosystem" and the name Microsoft
immediately jumps front and center. The only advantage Ms has
is, their distribution channel. They can roll out 1.5 million
copies in a single swoop. They can also issue a critical security
update that will screw with iTunes on windows. the affect on
iTunes will be unintentional, of course, but they will use that to
push for their own service.

On the whole, I like iTunes and the music store. I can easily
transfer songs to my iPod (40 GB). With it's ease of use, sleek
design and user friendly DRM, it's no wonder it's the industry
leader. Hey RIAA, MPAA there's no need to fear the internet. Use
it to push sales, just don't jack up the prices. Consumers will shy
away from high prices.
