Dear xuniL_z
It's like this. I don't know you, personally, and you shouldn't read any pretended personal insight into anything I post on these forums. The forumis just a platform for some of the views I hold on this world and the things in it. Its a narrow slice indeed of a real life and a real person. Your posts were also a platform, and my responses based on what's said in the post. Yes, I get carried away sometimes. It's a forum, not a paper with a deadline, and standards to uphold (apart from those I agreed to when registering).

On the case in point, there simply don't seem to be any more references to Microsoft's corporate thinking at that time, apart from what leaks out from the many court cases in which Microsoft are constantly embroiled. It could well be that this guy was evangelising and he was saying what seemed to be pushing the right buttons during his presentation. Even so, this was not a ZDnet poster writing an opinion. It ws a Microsoft employee, who will have had training in the consditions surrounding his employment. He had no problem with describing Microsoft's attitude to developpers in the way he did. He didn't pluck that metaphor out of the air for no reason, ask any psychologist! He was not sacked. He was not told off. Miicrosoft were happy with what he said, in other words. It wasn't perceived as anything they - or waggoner-edstrom, PR, were iffy about. If any of the audience complained, we'll never know. The fact remains. Whatever his perception was, of how Microsoft were treating their developpers at the time, he chose to describe it as "It's like you're going out with a girl; forgive me, it goes the other way also. You're going out with a girl, what you really want to do is have a deep, close and intimate relationship, at least for one night. And, you know, you just can't let her feel like that, because if you do, it ain't going to happen, right. So you have to talk long term and white picket fence and all these other wonderful things, or else you're never going to get what you're really looking for."

And you want an example of this policy in action? Ask the VB6 developpers, how easy it was to junk everything they'd ever written, and then be forced to pay Microsoft again to upgrade to VB7 and the joyous prospect of re-writing every program they'd ever developped. At their cost. In their time. That's what this bozo was saying in his evangelising.

"It sounds like perfection. Microsoft had perhaps the largest number of developers in the world hooked on a language which in turn was hooked to Windows. Yet Microsoft took this asset, of incalculable value, and apparently tossed it aside. Back in 2002, it announced that the language was to be replaced by something new, different and incompatible. That caused rumblings that continue today. Developers expressed emotions ranging from frustration to anger. They felt betrayed".

Didn't our Microsoft evagelist just hit that nail right on its head?
