Ever seen a motivational sales session?
The seller is domineering and omnicompetent, the buyer is denigrated and said to be left mutilated, if not fatally injured. Often with loud music playing in the background and many invitations to chant.

For an observer like me, it's a confusing style of presentation. There's little interest in "The customer is always right."

I don't know what happened in 1996. Given Microsoft's apparent taste in music, the event may not have included all possible effects, at least. But the sentiments would be appropriate to a speech ending: "Go get 'em."
