It was really imperitive for this to happen ...
This 'merger' represents two concerns joining forces. On the one hand are the key commercial players that have been behind OSDL since its inception. On the other we have the key players in the drive towards an external common standard or 'API' for the Linux OS. The two interests represented here are inseparable. The real surprise is that it has taken them this long to discover that. The real challenge going forward is to allow freedom for the multitude of Linux distros to compete by offering unique features and software methods AND at the same time create a commonality that allows platform application developers to write (and compile) once for all distros and KNOW that the resulting application will work flawlessly with all distros (package managers, etc), desktops, and window managers. This is a formidable task and will require close cooperation between the former OSDL players and the LSB team. But it can be accomplished. Already there are plans for a Super Package Manager that will deliver a given application to the lower level native package manager (whichever one it may be) in a way that the given software can be optimally managed by the distro in question. This way developers can write once for all distros just like they now do for Windows, and have that resulting application load and run error free on a wide range of diverse distros, and possibly even on non-Linux platforms like BSD, Solaris, and other Unix variants. This alone will be a huge step forward for a whole range of OS products that currently require applications to be semi-customized to accommodate their diverse eccentricities. So all in all this is a great step forward and brings together two pieces of the puzzle into one far more useful piece. It clears the decks for far more rapid innovation on the nix desktop side. Good move ... no doubt about it.
