Nationalize the Gates Foundation
Reform is necessary. The Gates Foundation was criticized last week end in both the LA and Seattle Times and then yesterday on a PBS radio channel. There is a disconnect between the Foundation Goals and how funds are invested. A good example was foundation grants to improve the areas where poor live. The amount last year for that kind of thing was 1.5 billion. It turns out that 9 billion had been invested in the same companies that caused pollution in the areas being improved.

The profession least respected in the US today is that of HMO Administrator and - you got it - the Gates Foundation is administered by a former HMO Administrator.

But lets not get into that. She actually appears to be doing good. Lets instead note that as long as computers are provided at libraries and schools by the use of public funds there is freedom. Computers provided by private charities - especially the Gates Foundation, come with strings attached.

Strings that cost the Seattle school superintendent his job when the Gates foundation yanked support last year and the school district had to make up for the lost funds by closing entire schools.

I am most concerned about grants from the Gates Foundation which encourage the removal from libraries of material related to the anti-trust problems Microsoft has had and the ties the Gates family had to Abramoff. Transparency in everything Gates Foundation is called for.

Of course I prefer nationalizing the Gates Foundation. Why not? We citizens get to decide what is public and what is private.
