Inductive vs Deductive Sherlock
Science advances by disproving theories. Computer scientists do the same. This is not necessarily the mode of an investigator who in many cases should not form a theory before looking for facts that support or do not support that theory. Instead the facts are gathered before theorizing. Its Inductive vs Deductive reasoning.

This different way of thinking is perhaps why there should be clear distiction on Blogs as to which audience should be participating. This Blog, Zdnet, has been designated for IT professionals, meaning computer scientists, meaning the scientific method applies. There are other Blogs such as register.com and law.com that get hung up on proof. Here we look to disprove.

From your post I will say that you did a great job of disproving. Let the theory die. Now on belief.

Believers are religous. No amount of facts gathered before or after forming opinion will change believers. Today we have believers in Microsoft vs "everyone else". What I am trying to portray is that Microsoft itself investes in companies like Apple. This makes business sence. Think about the likely largest reseller of Microsoft SQL Server (Oracle). If Oracle can make money reselling Microsoft product then shouldn't Microsoft be able to make money reselling Apple, or more importantly Novell product.

So here is a new theory. If Microsoft doesn't pay the University of California Berkeley for its patent on how Active-X and Java Applet controls work in its browser (580 million) then the company demonstrates that it will eventually drop IE7 development entirely. We IT professionals should recognize this and develop for the FireFox rather than IE7 browser, in spite of its inclusion in Vista.

Seriously, a better product that is freely supported and open, that Microsoft itself can bundle if it chooses to vrs further code development that is crippled by legal-design and unwillingness to pay UC Berkelely. Only a believer will not see the loonicy.
