You got me there

Although I know Rational Rose to be a very very high end tool that anything you are using now cannot touch. There are far too many variables here to say if you found a winner. The level of competency of your developers. Perhaps they are not doing jobs that require the use of very high end products such as RR? If this is the case, this is not a benchmark but a good example of finding the right tool for ONE particulat scenario. I like that though. That is how I think. I don't spend money for technologies sake, you know. I weigh the requirements and if existing tools can be made to fill those requirements. If not, I must find tools that do, since ROI can be achieved on many projects, even with high cost tools, if the job at hand is affecting the companies bottom line in any significant way. Most times any automation is doing that, so you also have to weigh it's worth over time. Freeware may save you up front, but it's preventing you from creating apps that would save the company even more (this is were developer and architect levels of expertise and ingenuity come in) then you simply have to do a study to determine which one will give most cost savings, or revenue enhancement over your projects lifetime.
Solaris systems are real engineering marvels. Sometmies, to tap their power, you do need high end tools.
