It was originally....
at least in terms of linux and torvalds releasing that OS, simply a new OS kernel (derived or copied from minix or unix in it's structure and entirely imitated in it's main components added to the kernel. It was to allow users a new OS but Torvalds is too laid back to consider he hoped for the religious war of words and hatred that it fueled.
It is misguided. No matter how good it gets or widely used it becomes, there will in the end be a certain number of large vendors that control it's destiny and direction. In any case it's innovation is already encapsulated inside of standards, which in many cases results in dumbing down one's thinking in certain aspects of the system. Not sure the process for a genius to gain acceptance of a new standard in the open source community, but if a closed source company, by their given rights, decides to create new technology that doesn't necessarily comply with EU or NFS or some large organization that employs therorists only, they get shot down in the forums, the press(which is entirely liberal now and anti MS). How can they be so smug? They stand up and declare they have broken laws of nature practically, when it's just a new way of doing things. A new protocol or document format is created and you'd think they were liable of the most outragous blasphemy imaginable. This world that is trying to sink MS nad it's dominance, is more controlling and in desire of pure dominance than anyting MS is today. It's really rather scary. Esp. considering the "bad guys" get all this techology for free as well. You know, the terrorists.
