There goes your credibility.
hmmm, does the government of the United States advocate a given software company? Nope. Unless you count Unix, which it paid for and every bit of open source to follow was just an offspring of what the United States government, with taxpayer dollars, created. Right down to the kernel in my beliefs. This is just a socialist rant, but believe me it's not just an EU monopoly. Quite the opposite, where you have many sympathetic to your cause here in North America. I guess North America is not biased in it's governement views of technology.

Microsoft are a North American monopoly, is it at all suprising that many of the educational institutions based in some of the other 199 countries on the face of the Earth, are getting ever keener to rid themselves of the Microsoft, parasitic overhead on their limited budgets?

As a citizen of the EU, I approve wholeheartedly of this drive to investigate, and wherever applicable, implement, open source solutions.

You don't even begin to account for the opportunities that are lost by going to "good enough" software in the schools. I'm sure the next generation may have a few more interested in Kernel technology than the past one, but by and large they were more than benefiting from the more productive and powerful suites. There is no cost once purchased. Office 2000 is going strong in most organizations now. 7 years and it's more than reached ROI. In the corporate world, it normally provides ROI within the first year. Now Office 2007 promises and delivers on some of the greatest innovation in years for this type of software. I don't think being biased toward it, or hating it because of ideology makes it any worse, or any worse for the children of the EU. But go ahead and choose the fate of the next generation of EU based on your biased, hate filled tech biogtry.
What makes your drive to rid the world of Microsoft and replace it with what you feel is the right software anymore right than to use Microsoft where it makes sense and *nix where it makes sense. Like U.S companies have done for decades now. The internet backbone is still a virtual lock, and was a monopoly, on *nix servers. Now U.S companies us Linux and Unix for many variety of things and Windows for others, usually the gui side of the business and vertical sector servers.

I'm sorry but this sounds more like political propoganda than anyting else. Is that what it is supposed to be?
