Good news from the EU
In another recent report, BECTA are advising UK schools not to bother with Vista. Of course the Microsoft party faithful don't care that expensive, Microsoft applications, requiring yet another hardware upgrade and continued vendor lock-in, are not in the best interests of UK academic institutions. Microsoft do not care about anything except consolidating their monopoly and making as much revenue as possible from every university, every school, every pupil who can be led to using theirproducts.

(quote)
The report found that whilst the new features of Vista add value, there are no ?must have? features in the product that would justify early deployment in schools. The technical, financial and organisational challenges associated with early deployment currently make this a high risk strategy. Early deployment is therefore strongly recommended against.

Schools are strongly advised to consider the findings of Becta?s final report on Vista due by January 2008 before considering any wide-scale deployment.
On Office 2007

The review of Office 2007 identified that there were over 170 new features in the product, but considered that many of them were of more use in a business rather than an educational context. A detailed analysis of the new functionality found that none of the new features were a ?must have? for schools.

As the costs of deployment of Office 2007 would be significant, Becta has not identified any convincing justification for the early adoption of Office 2007. Recognising that many schools already have perfectly adequate office productivity solutions there would have to be a strong case to justify the necessary investment.

---------------- end quote.

Microsoft are a North American monopoly, is it at all suprising that many of the educational institutions based in some of the other 199 countries on the face of the Earth, are getting ever keener to rid themselves of the Microsoft, parasitic overhead on their limited budgets?

As a citizen of the EU, I approve wholeheartedly of this drive to investigate, and wherever applicable, implement, open source solutions.
