You might be able to open source base functionality, but charge for
advanced functionality with a better user interface. You could also charge for proprietary versions to be integrated with proprietary software. To do this, you might think about using a dual license like MySQL. Release under GPL, but offer other licenses for commercial use if they want to keep changes proprietary.
