It really does not matter how or where the money comes from to pay the
developers. The important thing is that the number of open source developers is growing exponentially with no sign of slowing, and most are higher paid than their Windows counter parts writing proprietary software. And, it is even harder for open source developers to screw customers by making it hard to use to get more support. Since it is open source, ANYBODY can make it easier to use, and SOMEBODY will eventually do it if the developers don't. Also, with competition among open source groups, like Gnome and Kde, if you are not focused like a laser beam on making it easier to use, people will switch to the other project eventually. The open source makes it impossible to hold back innovations like ease of use features.
