OSS is good in many markets
even commercial, and closed is good in a limited sphere of business/home use. After a fashion, one has to find the implementation of one or the other, where it fits. Sometimes, even changing the market to make it fit at the time. At this time, OSS is supported by a number of factors, the internet, widely available tools that have been crafted and honed over the years to support it, a pool of eduacated developers born and teeth cut on technology, a sense of community if not political or religious like affiliation, . . . a few commercial 800 pound gurillas willing to bring it to the forefront by employing it, embracing and extending it into their commercial landscapes, partnerships and seedings.
